The Faculty of Engineering Auditorium at Chulalongkorn University has been reimagined as a contemporary performance venue by ONG&ONG Thailand in association with Architects & Associates Co., Ltd (A&A). The 2,120-square-metre hall addresses the limitations of the existing structure, where single-layer walls allowed sound to escape, affecting acoustic performance.
The design concept draws from the idea of a "cocoon," introducing an additional internal envelope that wraps the auditorium with a secondary layer. Beyond its functional role, the cocoon symbolises nurturing and transformation, much like silkworms developing within a cocoon before emerging as beautiful butterflies, reflecting the institution's role in cultivating students.
A defining feature is the three-dimensional faceted geometry across walls and ceilings, creating sculptural depth whilst dispersing sound evenly throughout the hall. The faculty's ceremonial ornament anchors the interior, its gilded form contrasting with the neutral palette. Warm timber, deep red seating and soft tones create an atmosphere that is both dignified and inviting.
