In the heart of Cyberjaya, Glades of Westlake, Setia Eco Glades emerges as a residential sanctuary where the poetic grace of classical Chinese architecture meets modern tropical living. Inspired by the serene landscapes of Hangzhou’s Westlake and the timeless charm of Jiang Nan’s canal towns, this development redefines luxury through a harmonious blend of East and West.

ONG&ONG Malaysia led the project from initial concept to final completion in 2024, overcoming challenges with creative solutions throughout the four-year journey. The vision was to craft a space where sweeping curved roofs, reminiscent of traditional Chinese dougong eaves, would dance against the sky, while moon bridges and tranquil lakes mirrored the tranquillity of Jiang Nan’s water villages. Every detail, from the tiered gardens to the textured brickwork, was meticulously designed to evoke a sense of timeless elegance, while remaining grounded in the practicality of contemporary tropical living.

Beyond its architectural achievements, Glades of Westlake is a celebration of nature and culture intertwined. Lush native landscaping frames the homes, while shaded walkways and biophilic design principles ensure a sustainable, immersive living experience. The lake, a centrepiece of the masterplan, not only ties the Oriental theme together but also fosters a microclimate that enhances comfort and biodiversity.

The journey was not without its trials. The early stages of construction coincided with the pandemic’s unpredictable lockdowns, forcing the team to adapt swiftly. Remote site monitoring and digital collaboration became the norm, ensuring quality standards were upheld despite physical limitations. As material costs soared in the wake of the pandemic, the project faced budget constraints that demanded innovative solutions.

Rather than compromise on the design, the team reimagined material palettes that retained the project’s Oriental essence while keeping within financial boundaries. The result is a testament to the team’s ingenuity: a development where modern lines and traditional motifs coexist seamlessly, and where the central lake—a nod to West Lake’s reflective waters—serves as both a visual anchor and a natural cooling element for the community.

Balancing aesthetic grandeur with functional adaptability has culminated in a space where every corner tells a story—a story of heritage reimagined, of challenges overcome, and of a future where tradition and modernity walk hand in hand.
