120 Cairnhill Road

This row of shophouses along Cairnhill Road are a rare example of such homes as they have two internal courtyards, linking three sections of the house. Most houses of this genre have only one internal courtyard – the provision of two here allows more light and ventilation into the unit. Architecturally, the front of the house embodies old world charm, whereas the rear court encompassing the kitchen on level one, master suite on level two and the roof terrace on level three gives the house a modern edge and is adapted to contemporary living. Originally, the rear court was a single storey structure, the architects added the second and third storey extension.   Another novel feature of this house is that it is only one of six in Singapore with its very own covered carpark, for two vehicles, at the rear. The master suite, part of the new extension, has a balcony and a large ensuite. The ensuite has pocket sliding doors hence integrating the spaces and allowing for maximum fluidity. Being an intermediate unit, the bathroom has no window. Light and ventilation are achieved through the provision of a skylight. The entire master bathroom is made of coral travertine including the cast in-situ bath. The ultimate touch of luxury is the presence of double rain showers and the floating mirror gracing the vanity counter. The piece de resistance of the house must be the roof terrace. Built on the roof of the extension block, the terrace maximizes the possibilities of the house providing the opportunity for external outdoor space, ideal for entertaining. Lush landscaping surrounds a plunge pool cum jacuzzi – the ultimate escape from the madding crowd, right at the cusp of Orchard Road!
